“I love my beautiful homeland Guyana and the diversity of its people. It is on South America’s North Atlantic Coast and is rich in history and culture. Guyana is home to six ethnic groups: Amerindians, Africans, East Indians, Chinese, Portuguese, and Europeans. It is popularly known as “The Land of Many Waters” with a stunningly beautiful Rain Forest, which I like to think of as one of the lungs of the earth.

Christmas is always a wonderful time in a country that is so rich in diversity. All the different foods that reflect our heritage, the gift exchanges, and the time spent with family and friends are priceless. Sharing this with my daughter is very important to me. I want her to know where I come from and what makes me the woman I am today.

She visited Guyana as a baby but was too young to experience a true Guyanese Christmas. I plan to take her back when she is older and can understand and enjoy everything Guyana offers. I believe that merging my Guyanese heritage with the Canadian traditions and customs will help her grow and learn from both experiences.”
